Parcel Box by Akio Kamei

by Mike on April 14, 2011

We were very lucky to acquire a small number of Parcel Boxes by Akio Kamei these past few weeks. To be frank, I liked the looks of this box at first glance and wanted to add one to my personal collection. I expected it to be very nicely crafted as Kamei is one of the top masters and this box did not disappoint me.
Made of Japanese Torreya and Walnut, the protruding interlocking pattern is very attractive. The exterior dimensions are approximately 3.15 x 3.15 x 3.15 inches and has Kamei’s stamped hanko in the interior of the box.
Opening this puzzle was a bit of a challenge for me. I pride myself on solving most Japanese Trick Boxes if given enough time. On this box however, I could not find any gaps or joints to tip me on how ANYTHING could possibly shift or slide. Finding the secret compartment for this piece was difficult as I could not locate any obvious hints. In my opinion, having the solution sheet available is an absolute MUST before the dreaded frustration factor sets in.
The mechanism to releasing the lid of the Parcel Box is a bit different and something that I did not expect. I will say even when you can complete the opening of this Japanese Puzzle Box, it would be easier to manipulate if you had a few extra fingers on each hand.

I do hope that Mr. Kamei decides to release another version of this box sometime in the future. To view this magnificent piece, please view our Japanese Trick Box Page.

I would be interested in purchasing one of these if you know where I can get one. Any idea of what these sell for?
